چکیده

In quintessence models, the dark energy content of the universe is described by a slowly rolling scalar field whose pressure and energy density obey an equation of state of the form p = wρ; w is in general a function of time such that w < −1/3, in order to drive the observed acceleration of the Universe today. The cosmological constant model (ΛCDM) corresponds to the limiting case w = −1. In this paper, we explore the prospects of using the Lyman-α forest to constrain w, using semi-analytical techniques to model the intergalactic medium (IGM). A different value of w changes both the growth factor and the Hubble parameter as a function of time. The resulting change in the optical depth distribution affects the optical depth power spectrum, the number of regions of high transmission per unit redshift and the cross-correlation coefficient of spectra of quasar pairs. These can be detected in current data, provided we have independent estimates of the thermal state of the IGM, its ionization parameter and the baryon density.

Numerical Simulations of the Lyman-α forest – A comparison of Gadget-2 and Enzo

We compare simulations of the Lyman-α forest performed with two different hydrodynamical codes, Gadget-2 and Enzo. A comparison of the dark matter power spectrum for simulations run with identical initial conditions show differences of 1-3% at the scales relevant for quantitative studies of the Lyman-α forest. This allows a meaningful comparison of the effect of the different implementations of...

The neutrino mass bound from WMAP-3, the baryon acoustic peak, the SNLS supernovae and the Lyman-α forest

We have studied bounds on the neutrino mass using new data from the WMAP 3 year data, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of the baryon acoustic peak, the Type Ia supernovae from SNLS, and the Lyman-α forest. We find that even in the most general models with a running spectral index where the number of neutrinos and the dark energy equation of state are allowed to vary, the 95% C.L. bound ...

Observational bounds on the cosmic radiation density

We consider the inference of the cosmic radiation density, traditionally parameterised as the effective number of neutrino species Neff , from precision cosmological data. Paying particular attention to systematic effects, notably scaledependent biasing in the galaxy power spectrum, we find no evidence for a significant deviation of Neff from the standard value of N 0 eff = 3.046 in any combina...

Constraints from the Lyman Α Forest Power Spectrum

We use published measurements of the transmission power spectrum of the Lyman α forest to constrain several parameters that describe cosmology and thermal properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM). A 6 parameter grid is constructed using Particle-Mesh dark matter simulations together with scaling relations to make predictions for the gas properties. We fit for all parameters simultaneously a...

Pressure Support vs. Thermal Broadening in the Lyman-α Forest II: Effects of the Equation of State on Transverse Structure

We examine the impact of gas pressure on the transverse coherence of high-redshift (2 6 z 6 4) Lyman-α forest absorption along neighboring lines of sight that probe the gas Jeans scale (projected separation ∆rp 6 500h−1 kpc comoving; angular separation ∆θ . 30). We compare predictions from two smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations that have different photoionization heating rates an...
